The Singles Project

(Note: since I posted this in March 2014, a lot of the links have died. Sorry, but I can’t be arsed to update them 🙂 )

David Bowie & Bing Crosby: “Little Drummer Boy”  ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiXjbI3kRus )   b/w “Heroes.” [from Crosby’s “Merrie Olde Christmas” TV special, for the longest time, you could only get this on a bootleg single, but it’s been released on compilations since.]

“John I’m Only Dancing 1972” b/w “Joe the Lion” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcXb2FXcWg4 )

“I love it when he says, so seriously, with his gun in my back, ‘Honey, close your eyes and think of England….just for one second.”’

DAY 6:

Great band name.  My gaydar wasn’t fully tuned in at that point, but their song titles (“Orgasm Addict,” “Just Lust,” “Why Can’t I Touch It?”) certainly made my teen boy hormones sit up and take notice.  It was only later that I found out that lead singer Pete Shelley was a big homo.

They were often derided in the musical press at the time (“Them songs got melodies and that ain’t punk!”)

With the benefit of hindsight, most of their singles seem like minor variations on a theme, and listening to all of them at once, like on the compilation “Singles Going Steady” (most of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2Mi995ggFU&list=PL866FD0E7564F2F63 ) is an exercise in diminishing returns.  Fun at the time, though.

Buzzcocks: “What Do I Get?” b/w “Oh Shit”
David Byrne: “Big Blue Plymouth (Eyes Wide Open)” b/w “Leg Bells”

(Catching up) Two good songs:  (1) “Love You More” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXFgRKRndfc ) for its surprise ending, and (2) “Ever Fallen in Love… (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPG6Ak5FASk ) coz it’s good.

*Spiral Scratch was one of the first “independent” releases of the punk movement.
**Latter-day original Buzzcocks (ca. 1980), with Steve Diggle taking on most of the songwriting chores, and not very good.

DAY 7 & 8 (two for the price of one):

Classix Nouveaux: “Nasty Little Green Men” b/w “Test Tube Babies”

One Song to Listen To:  The Cabs’ “Seconds Too Late.” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEyqe3cyY38 ) They’re notable if only for their consistency/single bloody mindedness.

-R

*who somehow successfully straddled the divide between Journey and Talking Heads (or at least Devo).  Brief anecdote: at college I was known as a fan of new wave, and one of my dorm-mates asked me, “Are The Cars considered New Wave? I hope not, ’cause I like them.”

** Still love this.  And no one sings like Cher.

***Another fave band.  Not sure why the reviewers got their knickers into a twist when they found out that Joe Strummer (R.I.P.) was middle class and not an authentic guttersnipe.  “Print the legend.”

****Their only US hit, and I use that word advisedly.

I won’t go on about Elvis Costello (you’re welcome), but will mention that IMO his first four albums are all excellent, and Get Happy!! sometimes overlooked.

One video I hope you’ll watch, not just a good song but also a visual lament for a building: “Hoover Factory” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FAzWgY8Ftc )

-R

*Interesting band (shared membership with Throbbing Gristle & Psychic TV), somewhere out there on the fringes of UK queer/art/punk/experimentalism, both musically & in their private lives.

**The UK picture sleeve was accidentally printed inside out.

*** IMO EC’s best song.

-R

*Later, Jayne.  From “F*** Off:”  “If you won’t f*ck me, baby/Baby, f*ck off.”  From “Toilet Love:” “I like toilet love/You like toilet love/We both like toilet love.” Classic.

**Interesting side project, a percussion-driven band, from drummer Budgie (aka “Mr. Siouxsie”) of Siouxsie & the Banshees.  Some songs instrumental, others with vocals from Mrs. Siouxsie.  This was  their first release.

***Another fave.  Musically not far from Gang of Four, with similarly distanced lyrics.  “‘Can I have a taste of your ice cream/Can I lick the crumbs from your table/Can I interfere in your crisis’/’No, mind your own business.'”

A song worth listening to:  Fleetwood Mac “Tusk,” odd ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT7W8xJFl_g ).

For the first time in years I cleaned my stylus, and that’s no euphemism.  Instead of the audiophile-preferred mix, apparently isopropyl alcohol and blue food coloring ($7 for 1.25 oz. from various sites) I used plain old rubbing alcohol ($1.99 for 16 oz. from Rite-Aid).  So far, my audiophile heresy has resulted in neither my stylus nor my penis falling off, but I’ll keep you posted.

Haysi Fantayzee: “Shiny Shiny” [US stereo/mono radio promo]
Heaven 17: “Pl

An unexpectedly good bumper crop of tunes this time around, from a fairly mongrel assortment of bands, so lots of links……

I like Paul Haig’s cover of “Running Away” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4U3mXC8-Sg ) almost as much as I like the Raincoats’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRSgMAVU6A4 ) and Sly & the Family Stone’s original (?) version ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQmCBOc8ICw ).  That song seems bad-cover proof.

Stay groovy,

*Another bit of loveliness from former Young Marble Giantists.

**On UK Stiff, different from (better than?) the US version.  Link is to the UK version.

***Anton Fier, Bill Laswell, Henry Kaiser, Chris Stamey, Michael Stipe, Arto Lindsay, Fred Frith, Richard Thompson, Carla Bley, and more. Still, they did come up with one song, “Omaha,” that wasn’t total art wankery.

*From the criminally underrated (although it has undergone a critical renaissance of sorts in the past few years) album “Kill City.”
**In retrospect, I wonder if Jimmy Saville’s haircut wasn’t his worst sin.
***Classic American New Wave, even if they were from Yorkshire.
****Terrible, and an accurate predictor of Weller’s later council stylings.

*Their first single, now pricey on eBay.
**For me, one of the key singles of post punk.
***Maybe the best song of the brief early-80’s punk/funk movement?  “Annie, I’m not your daddy/See, if I was in your blood, you wouldn’t be so ugly.”

Try this one on for size: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uTvxUiDbac

-R

*Two minutes and five seconds of brilliantly nonsensical noisy girl pop, and The Best Single Ever.  Ignore any Johnnies-come-lately who claim that TBSE is a song by beat combo “The Breeders.” (1)

**I love Lene Lovich.  Her American label, Epic, tried to downplay her general oddness, her odder Eastern European vibe, and her even odder vocals — rather missing the point.

***”I made an American squirm/And it felt so right”

Bisous,
-R

*For me, one of the best of the post-punk punk/funk songs.
**Another key post-punk single.
***My #1 single when I was 11.
****It would probably be gay to mention that there’s a better version of this song from “Glee:” http://blip.tv/kyogo/glee-kristin-chenoweth-lea-michele-maybe-this-time-3209447

Hi Rochelle!

Bacci,
-R

(1) “Shirt tails up, long shorts down/ In a sleazy part of town”

*Great band, goofy, but with impeccable melody/pop song-writing skills, at least until their third album.
**Another fave of young Robert.
***This was (with the benefit of hindsight, inexplicably) a minor U.S. New Wave pop hit.
****For me, yet another key post-punk single, and the first time New Order were able to break away from the “Joy Division sound.”

DAY 24:

Although not without interest, kind of a middling selection this time around.  I’m reserving my choice of recommendation for next time.

-R

*By Daniel Miller, and released on his, at the time, non-existent Mute Records label.  The rest is history.  Still sounds amazing, and another key PP single for me.
**Hyperbole included, one of the best song titles ever?

Whew, lotsa  links this time, but that reflects the quality of the material rather than any misplaced enthusiasm on my part.  Who knew P would be so rewarding?

No recommendations, just pick ‘n’ choose, especially if it’s The Pop Group or PiL  🙂

-R

*Novelty hit or New Wave classic?  You be the judge.
**MOR pseudo-reggae New Wave lite, but I still love all three of these songs, especially MiaB.
***Proto punk/funk, and the band’s members/associates ended up in/influencing any number of other bands.  Still sounds ahead of/beyond its time after 34 (oy vey!) years.
****More old faves that still sound really good.
*****For me, not a key post-punk single, but THE key post-punk single, and a candidate for best single ever.

Robert Rental: “Double Heart” b/w “On Location” [MUTE010]

-R

*If you grew up at a certain time, you can’t not love it, plus a link would be redundant since you already know it by heart. If not, it’s just musical wankery  🙂
**I’ve probably gone on about my love for this band enough.

DAY 27: Out of the closet

where most of my singles live, and now into a bookcase in the hallway for the rest.

The end of “R” is fallow ground, but “S” is up next!

My one recommendation would be Rip Rig + Panic, a Neneh Cherry vocal ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4VXo4gu2Vk ).  Second favorite RR+P song title is “Bob Hope Takes Risks.”

Bisous,
-R

*More of that whole Pop Group group.
**Lene Lovich’s version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJRGdQSvwjU , still no patch on the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkMFLUXTEwM

Sister Sledge: “We Are Family”*** ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBpYgpF1bqQ ) b/w “Easier to Love”

Best Sex Pistols track IMO:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWF9MMxnekQ

-R

*Best band ever?  Not for their influence and not for the myth, but because even after all these many years, and no matter how familiar, the music+vocals (especially the vocals) still sound transgressive.  If I could have only one DID, it would be their album.

Cheers,
-R

*Another great band name, another fave girly band.  My few singles aren’t representative of their output.
**Gosh, another fave.  Their success might have contributed to the ultimate downfall of Rough Trade, and none of their albums were as good as they might have been, but they produced a pretty amazing string of A-sides.  Plus groovy picture sleeves (they knew their audience).
***One of the few Smiths singles with IMO a better B- (they’re usually filler) than A-side.

DAY 31:

If you only have time to watch one video, this is classic 70’s variety show footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT_y5qri00o

After searching for days, I finally found my copy of “Raw Power” and was able to listen to “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOV66-W9QeM ) so now all is right in my world  🙂

Thanks,
-R

[1] “When you say love
It means you found your special one
And that you care enough to give your very best
When you say love
There’s not another word that says so much
Cause that four-letter word means happiness”

*Another bad cover-proof song, cf. Gloria Jones’ original: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSehtaY6k1U ) and Coil’s cover: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo3TUtRnZi4 ).
**Two unique vocal stylists for the price of one.

Thanks,
-R

*Dunno why, but I’ve always loved this song.
**The two copies I have disagree, label-wise, as to which is “Side A” and which is “Side B.”
***They may have been opportunistic punks/New Wavers, but IMO this song makes up for their sins.

Is this the best song from Talking Heads ’77?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9CjnDufqeQ

(I’ve Got a Pocket Full of) Pretty Greens

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq2YwbNl6zY

They just got a trimming and I had a lovely salad with my lunch. It has been 90-95 (32-35) every day here for the last ten days, with no end in sight. Some of the greens (arugula, I’m looking at you!) don’t like the hot weather and keep trying to bolt (flower) so I have to keep pinching off the buds to try to encourage them to grow leaves instead.

I’m getting a nice salad every two or three days.

The lettuces seem to love the heat. Almost (but not quite) too pretty to eat!

Midge Baked a Cake!

(from guest hostess Madge)

Midge, as y’all know, is my best girlfriend.  But just between you, me and the fireplace, sometimes I think she takes too many shortcuts.  We housewives all know that the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but I can just imagine her borrowing Larry’s drill and, well, you can guess the rest.

From what Midge says, Larry hasn’t gotten his drill out for years, but Betty down the street says he’s good at hammering and pounding.  I didn’t know he was such an accomplished carpenter.

Honestly, I owe Midge a lot.  She’s a “progressive” (as the Yankees say) gal, and over the years has given me many a fashion tip.  For example, did you know that you can buy mascara in a tube?

But (I couldn’t believe this either) she’s never made Larry a cake from scratch! The girls were all a-titter during last Tuesday’s koffee klatch, and if you believe the gossip, Midge bought Larry a cake from a store!

Well, as you know, I’m always one to help out my friends.  And what makes Larry, by which I mean Midge, happy makes me happy, so I generously volunteered to teach her my secret poppyseed cake recipe.  She has this new camera called a “Polaroid,” and you can actually see the snapshots ten minutes after taking them!

First, you soak 1 cup of poppy seeds overnight in 3/4 cup of milk.

DSCN4580 poppies

Next, you cream a stick of butter with 1-1/2 cups sugar.  Imagine, Midge didn’t even have a pastry blender, so I had to borrow her mine!

DSCN4583 creamy

Creaming is hard work for a gal, so Midge asked Larry to help, but he said she hadn’t made him cream for years, so he wasn’t going to try that again.  Then Midge got a sour look on her face for some reason.

Then you add 2 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 1/2 cup milk.

The next step is to beat three egg whites until stiff.  Midge went into the living room to turn on “All My Children,” which even before Larry bought her a color set with his promotion money she never missed an episode.  The girls at the Kiwanis Wives say that’s because she’s barren, but honestly, I don’t understand that because she always seems to have lots of clothes.

So I asked Larry if he would help, and he kind of mumbled that after a few stiff ones the only thing he wanted to beat was . . . his wife!  That Larry, such a card!

DSCN4590 white

Midge took a Polaroid picture of Larry and then he got really mad for some reason, yelling at her about his enflamed “he-man roids” (or something like that) and why did she have to keep reminding him and somesuch.  I think maybe he’s camera-shy.

Well, I never did see the end of the cake.  Joe called and said his secretary was ill again.  She gets ill a lot, and Joe, out of the goodness of his heart, stays late and, as he says, “takes care of her needs.”  Honestly, I’m starting to get a little suspicious.  She’s paid by the hour, so I think she might be trying to pad her pocketbook.

Spice It Up!

(repost from 2013)

I’m using “spices” in the sense of both herbs and spices.  Two observations, one for the cost-conscious housewife, and one for the foodies.

1. Take advantage of ethnic markets

If you have any access to ethnic markets, use them!  Unless you’re wedded to supermarket brands like McCormick and Spice Island, you’ll find the same or better quality, and much cheaper prices.

Oregano:

DSCN4436 oregano

Supermarket price, $4.50 per ounce, vs…..

DSCN4432

….$1.04 per ounce.

Cumin seed from Giant at $3.19 an ounce:

Cumin

or ……

DSCN4423 cumin

32 cents/oz. from an Indian market.

I don’t have to tell the cost-conscious consumer that it’s not worth driving the Buick miles out of the way just to save some jack if it’s a spice she rarely uses.

2. For foodies

Grind your own!  Any spices you can buy whole (seedy ones like coriander, cumin, fennel, cardamom, etc.) lose all their flavor exactly 2.9 days after they’re ground.  Even if that statistical observation is only 90% accurate, whole spices keep for a long time, whereas ground spices start to deteriorate immediately.  You never know how long either has been sitting on the shelf, so it’s safer to buy whole.

Spend $20 on a cheap coffee grinder. This Braun has served me well for many years:

DSCN4426 grinder

….and grind your own.

In the past, I’ve been very laissez-faire, grinding whole spices when I had them, and not worrying about it when I didn’t.  But now that I’ve become a total food snob, I don’t use anything that doesn’t come out of the grinder, man!  Buying whole Sichuan peppercorns a few months ago and the difference between freshly ground and the relatively tasteless powder just confirmed my decision.

Some websites advise that after using your grinder, you can clean it by grinding up white rice.  This hasn’t worked for me….I just carefully wipe out both the base and cover with moistened paper (kitchen) towels.

But (I hear you say) I already have 12 steps to follow in this recipe and now you’re asking me to grind spices?!?  Well, it only takes 30 seconds extra, which you can probably spare.

3. Grow Your Own

If you have a bit of sun, and don’t mind watering most of them every day in summer, most herbs are ridiculously easy to grow from seed.  I’ve grown basil, cilantro, dill, epazote, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and thyme.  Rosemary seems to die if you transplant it, and cilantro I’ve given up on — even the “non-bolting” varieties bolt (flower) almost immediately.

Most years I have my “basil factory.”  Far more than I can use fresh, so I puree it with olive oil and freeze it, for a little taste of summer in the middle of winter.

IMG_0749Basilfactory

Q:  Should I buy fresh herbs from the supermarket?

Yes, if that’s your only option.  It’s ridiculous that Safeway charges $3.29 for 15 leaves of fresh basil, when you can go to an Asian market and pay half the price for ten times the quantity.  Or buy a packet of seed for $1.49 and go crazy!

Q:  Should I buy dried herbs?

Yes.  Dried and fresh herbs don’t taste the same, and both have their uses.  Dried herbs are at their best in anything that’s cooked for a long time, fresh in anything that’s briefly cooked.

Q:  Aren’t you over-complicating things?  Isn’t it best to just cook from fresh and not worry about the details?

Yes.

My He-Man House Skills

(repost from 2013, updated)

I’m not very good at DIY, other than t’other kind, with two exceptions: (1) I’m a dab hand with PVC pipe, learnt back in my aquarium days, and (2) painting.  If that doesn’t seem impressive, keep in mind that I can also scrape, spackle, and sandpaper.

I actually enjoy painting, except that I’m not very precise, so I spend a lot more time sticking up blue tape than actually painting.

For a long time, I had an aquarium in the living room, and didn’t realize that its hang-on filter had a slow leak, until the paint behind it started to bubble and peel. I put off this little project for six months, for no good reason. I had the tools, but for the longest time, not the will:

Before and after:

In one sense, it’s a bit disappointing to expend all that effort just to end up where I started from. Perhaps a life lesson?

In another sense, it’s a relief.  All of my pieces and objets were chosen very carefully, with all due consideration to how they would (or deliberately wouldn’t) work in the context of a traditional Cape Cod house from 1948, and not at all because I used to get drunk and buy lots of old crap from eBay.

I’m still madly in love with favourite “piece,” my 1970’s tiki sofa:

The canvas straps that support the bottom cushion have stretched a bit, so you sink into it; one button on the bottom cushion was missing and another had become detached, but other than that it was pristine. At $900, not much than you would pay for a new sofa, this was an incredible find.

Unfortunately, it has some Sluggo souvenirs, like this:

. . . which there is nothing to be done about, and this:

I fretted over her urinary souvenir for months (who would want to sit there?) then finally discovered that the bottom cushion is exactly the same on the top and the bottom . . . so I can just flip it over!

The back cushions have faded over the years:

. . . but they, too, are reversible, and then the colours really pop!

Making Sourdough Bread (again)

One of the fun things about sourdough bread is its semi-randomness — you can never be sure which particular strain of wild yeast you’ve captured, how long it will take to rise, etc., although the results are pretty much guaranteed to be delicious.

In retrospect, I realize now that the strain of wild yeast from my first culture, over a year ago, was pretty weak. It made lots of tiny bubbles and took forever (an entire day or overnight) to rise. After it crashed, I started over, and this time have a strain that is much more aggressive. It produces fewer but much bigger bubbles, and only takes a few hours to rise — although the end product is pretty much the same.

Ingredients:

  • 1 C. sourdough starter
  • 4 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt

Method:

Remove 1 C. of the sourdough starter.

Stir in 1 C. flour, plus enough water (~3/4 C.) to make a soft dough.

Allow it to rise, maybe a few hours, maybe overnight, until it looks like this:

Stir in 3 C. flour, and enough water (maybe 2 to 2-1/2 C.) to make a stiff dough. Knead for 7 minutes, pat it into a loaf shape, place it in the pan, and cover it with plastic wrap:

Leave it to rise, again, maybe a few hours, maybe overnight.

Here you can see how this strain of wild yeast makes really big holes:

Oops! Don’t forget to oil the plastic wrap before you put it on top of the pan!

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the loaf pan. If you have a cooking thermometer, take it out when the inside reaches 190 degrees.

I can get a 4 lb. sack of flour at Aldi for $1.15, so each loaf comes it at less than 50 cents.

Yum!
